Ikea dona 43 millones de euros a ACNUR

Se trata de la mayor donación privada que ha recibido el Alto Comisariado de las Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados (ACNUR) en sus 60 años de existencia.

Ikea ha querido donar estos 43 millones de euros para atender a los desplazados por la hambruna en el cuerno de África. El dinero se entregará de forma escalonada durante tres años, señaló ayer en Ginebra el portavoz de ACNUR, Adrián Edwards.

Concretamente, la ayuda irá dirigida a cubrir las necesidades del campo de Dadaab, en Kenia, el complejo de refugiados más grande del mundo en el que viven 440.000 somalís, de los que 152.000 han llegado en las últimas semanas huyendo de la hambruna.

 

Se trata también de la primera vez que un organismo privado elige financiar directamente todas las operaciones de un campo de refugiados concreto, según Edwards.

 

El alto comisionado de la ONU para los refugiados, Antonio Guterres, ha indicado en un comunicado que el gesto de esta empresa llega en un momento crítico, en el que miles de personas huyen cada semana de Somalia, donde la situación de hambruna se agrava por momentos.
